Discuss Your Options
Coastal Skin & Laser offers a range of skin procedures, including skin biopsies, performed in our clinic by GP Specialists with the support of registered nurses. These services may assist in early identification and planning for skin-related concerns noted during checks or consultations.
We follow medical protocol using techniques for procedures, including lesion removal and skin biopsy. Each case is assessed individually, allowing us to recommend the most appropriate approach based on your history, risk factors and symptoms.
We also work with digital imaging, pathology services and treatment planning tools to help support accurate and timely outcomes. If further care is needed, we can guide you through your options or provide a referral to a non-GP specialist.
Why choose us:
- GP Specialist-led procedures
- Individual treatment planning
- Aiming to focus on safety & clinical clarity

FAQs
How does it work?
A skin biopsy removes a sample of a lesion for laboratory testing. It helps confirm whether a spot, mole or lesion is benign, abnormal or cancerous. A complete removal of a lesion or mole follows the same protocol except the aim is to completely remove it with margins of clearance.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and usually involves minimal discomfort.
What to expect on the day of my procedure?
When attending for your procedure, you will be assigned a registered nurse who will explain anything you may want to ask questions about.
Your treatment room nurse will prepare all things for the doctor pertaining to your procedure and will assist the doctor throughout your allocated booking time.
You will be provided with aftercare advice and information about what to do if you are concerned and also when to come back for review and/or sutures out.
When do I pay?
Medicare assigns item numbers based on the mole's diagnosis and size. This is why, on some occasions, we hold the billing until you return for your sutures to be taken out or for your review.
You will be informed of and consented to the out-of-pocket (gap) fee prior to your procedure. This fee remains the same, but the initial out-of-pocket fee will vary depending on the item number assigned by Medicare.
When will I get my result?
If there is anything of concern in the biopsy or excision histopathology result, the doctor will either phone you or place you on a recall to return to the practice. Your doctor will explain the result and if any further treatment is required. This may include referral to plastic/general surgeon, further excision in clinic, follow up cryotherapy or other modalities of treating any residual skin cancer based on the diagnosis.
Does a skin procedure hurt?
Most procedures are done under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn't feel pain during the procedure.
Can I have a procedure on the same day as my skin check?
If time allows and the doctor advises, some procedures can be completed on the day of your skin check. If not, another appointment will be scheduled promptly.
How long does it take to heal after a skin procedure?
Healing times vary depending on the procedure but generally take 7-14 days. Detailed aftercare instructions will be provided to support a smooth recovery.
