Photodynamic Therapy on the Sunshine Coast

Sunshine Coast Photodynamic Therapy

Coastal Skin & Laser on the Sunshine Coast offers photodynamic therapy (PDT) as a treatment for sun damage and related skin concerns. PDT is a different way to treat sun-damaged skin. It is a non-invasive treatment that can help improve the overall health, look and feel of your skin. Aside from sun-damage, PDT can also help treat rosacea, acne, large pores and skin discolouration. Hard to treat areas such as the chest, arms, hands and legs can be included.

This treatment is a doctor prescribed treatment. You are welcome to come with your own GP specialist referral for PDT or book an appointment with one of our skin GP specialists for a consultation to discuss your suitability for this procedure.

We welcome patients across the Sunshine Coast including Noosa, Coolum, Maroochydore, Mooloolaba and Caloundra.

Using a Light-Sensitive Solution

Photodynamic therapy uses a light-sensitive solution activated by a medical-grade LED to treat premalignant skin cells while the surrounding tissue is largely spared. PDT is a doctor-led treatment, and we welcome referrals from other GP specialists.

At Coastal Skin & Laser, PDT is prescribed following a clinical assessment. It may be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments, depending on the area being addressed. Sessions are typically spaced several weeks apart and aftercare instructions are provided to assist with recovery.

This treatment is suitable for areas where other options may be limited, including large surfaces or difficult-to-treat zones.

Photodynamic therapy features include:

  • GP Specialist-prescribed treatment process
  • Non-surgical light-based application
  • May assist with visible redness, uneven tone and sun-related changes
  • Available for face, chest, arms and legs

FAQs

How does PDT Work?

A naturally occurring substance called 5-ALA is applied to the affected area. When applied to the skin, 5-ALA is absorbed into abnormal or damaged cells, bacteria and oil glands.

Once absorbed, an LED light is focused on the treated area for a period of time. When exposed to light, the abnormal skin cells are selectively destroyed to reveal fresh, healthy skin cells, less acne and improved skin texture.
